Anxiety Q&A

What Are the Symptoms of Anxiety?

Children with anxiety typically experience symptoms of anxiety that are similar to the symptoms adults experience. Symptoms may include excessive worry, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, excessive sweating, difficulty breathing, shaking, and nausea. In children, parents may also notice avoidance of social activities, heightened emotion, and tantrums.

What Can Dr. Nahas Do for a Child with Anxiety?

If a parent notices that a child is exhibiting symptoms of anxiety, Dr. Nahas can help. She will begin by talking to the child and the parents about the symptoms the child is experiencing. After she understands the extent of the disorder, she will recommend a treatment plan to help the child deal with symptoms. Prior to resorting to medications, Dr. Nahas teaches children various modalities for stress reduction and uses vitamins and supplements in order to boost the nervous system, hopefully alleviating or eliminating the anxiety more naturally. However, treatment plans for children with anxiety may include medications, such as anti-depressants, and specific types of therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy. Dr. Nahas will also educate the parents and provide them with resources they can use to support the child.

What Treatments Are Best for Children with Anxiety?

Every child is different. Sometimes, simply helping a child cope with stress and providing appropriate guidelines for nutrition can be enough. Other times, children respond well to anxiety medication, however, others may not be able to tolerate medication as well. Some children may notice minimal symptoms of anxiety while they are taking medication and participating in therapy, while others may do just as well with therapy alone. Dr. Nahas will work with each patient and his or her parents to develop a treatment plan that is both safe and effective.

Can Anxiety Be Cured?

Some children may experience fewer symptoms of anxiety as they age. However, for many people, anxiety is a lifelong struggle. Fortunately, with early treatment, patients can learn to control their symptoms and live full, productive lives. Children with anxiety should meet with Dr. Nahas on a regular basis to make sure that the treatment plan is appropriate and as effective as it can be.
